Those interested in joining the Honor Squad are asked to contact the Honor Squad Commander or Recruiter and schedule observations of services at the National Cemetery. Observing Honor Squads will help the recruit determine if s/he is able to handle physical requirements including executing drills with the M1 rifle used in the rifle salute, standing and marching, and serving during varied weather conditions.
Recruits will complete an Honor Squad application form and also forms included in a Veteran Affairs Hospital Volunteer Services packet. Passing a background check that includes being cleared to handle a firearm is required prior to issuance of an ID badge.
After receiving clearance from Volunteer Services and an ID badge, a uniform will be issued (members provide their own black shoes and black winter gloves). Recruits must then contact the Honor Squad Commander to convey the day(s) of week s/he will serve.
