The Honor Squad proudly represents and accepts veterans from all branches of the military, as well as adult civilians that have never served. With a wide range of volunteers, new members are likely to fit in and find comfort in honoring our veterans. We ask for one day a week commitment, if possible. Cemetery services are Monday through Friday (with very rare need on Saturday). Right now, services are mainly scheduled for the top of the hour, between 9am and 2pm. Lunch is provided at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), if 4 hours or more are being volunteered for that day. It is asked that Honor Squad members arrive an hour before the first service.

Commander (Tom Jones: 937.248.1785 / tjones2313@hotmail.com)
or
Recruiter (Megan Brackney: 937.532.3972 / meggyjb@yahoo.com)

to schedule a time to observe services at the Dayton National Cemetery.
Their contact information can also be found on the flyer at the bottom of this page.

This will allow you to determine if you are able to handle the physical requirements that include executing drills with the M1 Garand Rifle (weighing 9.5 pounds) that is used in the rifle salute, as well as, standing, marching, and serving during various weather conditions.

Recruits will then complete an Honor Squad application form, as well as forms via the VAMC Voluntary Services (now called CDCE).

You will be required to pass an FBI background check (w/fingerprints) before you are issued a photo ID badge. You will also be required to take (and pass) a Tuberculosis (TB) test.

Once you have been cleared by the CDCE and you have been given an ID badge, you will let the Honor Squad Commander or Recruiter know which day(s) of the week you will be able to serve on.

Recruits will be issued the following: 2 shirts (short and long sleeve), 2 hats (warm and cold weather), white gloves, white scarf, white belt. Winter coats and rain jackets are available for shared use (and winter coats are also available for purchase). Members must provide their own black dress pants (not jeans), black socks, black shoes (not sneakers), and black winter gloves.
